Woman of Valor
Most of us are familiar with the verse from Proverbs 31 where a virtuous, noble or excellent woman is known to be worth far more than rubies or other precious treasures.
I once spotted a twist on this verse which spoke of a woman of “valor” and when my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer I designed this piece and worked on it when she began her chemotherapy treatments because it seemed to suit her so well.
Valor can be defined as exhibiting “exceptional courage and fortitude” which is certainly a description of many we know who undergo difficult circumstances with grace and strength. The iris flower, with its three petal shape, is included in the design because it represents faith, valor and wisdom – so is perfect to signify the characteristics we see in women we know who are living through their own personal challenges.
The design is worked with cotton floss on 40ct silk gauze – but as a traditional sampler design is very well suited to stitching on linens. The finished size on gauze is a petite 4”w x 2”h (on 28ct over two threads that would be 11”w x 5.4”h).
